A New Chapter in ASEAN-China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
In an era when information moves faster than ever before, relations between nations are no longer built solely through formal diplomacy or economic cooperation. Strong relations are also shaped through effective communication, cultural exchange, and the understanding that grows among societies.
This was the central focus of the 2026 ASEAN-China Media Cooperation Forum in Shenyang, China, held under the theme "Media Convergence for Shared Growth: Opening A New Chapter in ASEAN-China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership." The forum brought together media leaders, government representatives, international organizations, and industry players from ASEAN member states and China to discuss how media can play a more strategic role in shaping the region's future.
Today, media is no longer merely a channel for disseminating information; it has evolved into an instrument of public diplomacy capable of shaping perceptions, building trust, and creating space for cross-cultural dialogue. Amid strengthening economic ties between ASEAN and China, the need for communication that is more inclusive, transparent, and people-oriented has become increasingly important. The greatest challenge is no longer how to physically connect nations, but how to connect perspectives, values, and understanding among societies with diverse cultural backgrounds.
The advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) opens new opportunities to address this challenge. AI enables real-time cross-language translation, accelerates the distribution of information, enhances content personalization, and helps generate more accurate insights into public trends and sentiment. This technology has the potential to reduce the communication barriers that have long posed challenges in cross-border interactions.
However, the greatest value of AI lies not in its speed, but in its capacity to broaden access to understanding. When combined with responsible media practices, AI can help deliver more balanced narratives, introduce diverse perspectives, and strengthen people-to-people connectivity across the ASEAN and China regions.
According to Helda Chandra, Managing Partner of Gentala Institute and Founder & CEO of Communic 8, the future of ASEAN–China relations will largely be determined by the ability of both regions to harness technology without losing sight of their values.
"Quality AI-driven media helps translate culture, including documenting and preserving cultural heritage, while also making it easier to build understanding and accelerate the flow of information. The future of ASEAN–China relations does not depend solely on increasingly advanced technology, but also on the ability to harness that technology to build trust, strengthen dialogue, and create more meaningful collaboration."
The combination of media, technology, and cultural intelligence will serve as an important foundation for building closer ASEAN–China relations in the future. When communication is able to bridge differences and accelerate connection, the opportunities to create shared growth, innovation, and regional prosperity will continue to grow. In the end, relations between nations are built not only through policy and investment, but also through the stories, conversations, and shared understanding that bring people together. Hopefully.
